8 weeks to boogie down. And 8 rules to live by.

The Ironman is just around the corner! Eek! Just 8 weeks to go (ok, 7.6 wks to go). Which means two things. One: that I need get serious. And Two: that my life (and thus blog) will be Ironman consumed (my apologies will follow).
The getting serious part has meant adopting new life rules for the next 8 weeks. Some I hope to keep around, some I’m itching to break (like no. 3).
- In bed by 9. That is the ONLY way that I will be able to stick with #2.
- Up by 5:30 (and 4:30 on long run days). I have to start getting in to a rhythm with morning workouts so that I’m not spending 3 hours after work working out. Because when that happens, I end up eating Dairy Queen for dinner. Over and over again.
- No alcohol. Because you can’t have just one. And then I can’t get up early. And I’m already perpetually dehydrated.
- Drink 3-4 Sigg bottles of water each day. I’ve been feeling sick, headachey and sluggish. I usually blame those symptoms on one of two things: lack of caffeine and dehydration. And there is no dearth of caffeine in my body.
- 30 min of stretching or yoga every day. I don’t stretch. And I’m always tight and sore. Fortunately there is a solution.
- Dog > Blog. Sorry guys. Poor little guy is neglected. Just like you guys. Unfortunately, I have a little more responsibility to take care of him. So, I need to make sure he’s getting the exercise and attention he needs.
- Eat healthy, real, good foods. Dinner last night? French fries and ice cream. Unfortunately for my fuel tank, that’s all too common lately (fortunately for my belly, though.) I have A LOT of work to do in the next 8 weeks, so I need the correct stuff for both fueling for and recovering from my workouts.
- Massages at least once every two weeks. This is gonna be a rough one, guys. I mean, who wants to be forced to get massages? :) I’m so looking forward to this…
So, yes, as I alluded to in the opening paragraph, the only way you are going to hear from me on here for the next eight weeks, is if I talk about the Ironman. Because, well, that’s all my life consists of lately. Well, that and a little bit of work (um, I won my first jury trial Monday…holla!).

amazing rules to live by. now if only someone would make me follow them haha
Massages? Life can be rough… lol
In all seriousness, though- good luck! I love how dedicated you are (especially with the 4:30 wake up calls! I’m still working on that one…)
I heart your 8 rules. Can I adopt them for marathon/ 1/2 Ironman training? In bed by 9 is my toughest. I’m usually not asleep until after 11, so it’s soooo hard to get up when the alarm goes off at 5:30. And dairy queen for dinner? Been there way too much.
8 weeks to go, you can do it! I wish I had eaten french fries and ice cream for dinner. Yum. Number 3 would be the hardest for me also. Good luck!
am i weird because i love rule lists? lol. GOOD LUCK!!!! real life is way more important than blog life. hang in there and your hard work will def pay off
Ahhh so exciting!! Good luck with training you’re definitely going to rock it. I probably missed it, but where is the race?
8 weeks to go! You are such an inspiration, seriously.
Of everything on that list, #2 would be the biggest investment for me. Waking up at 5am can feel ROUGH for that first 10 seconds, can’t it? But it’s funny how you never regret getting up and doing the damn thing.
A friend once told me: “You can choose to sleep in and miss out, or you can choose to get up and experience the JOY.” It’s now on a sticky on my nightstand.
You’re gonna rock these rules, even if you (necessarily) break ‘em every once in a while.
Oh man, number 8 is sure gonna be a tough one!
Glad you included a fun rule in there!!
Pen, this is SO exciting!!! I can’t wait to read about everything. Best of luck with it all!!
I find making time to stretch to be a hard rule to live by even though I really do recognize how much better it makes me feel. But at the end of the day, I just want to sit around like a bum- not add something else to my list.
Oh! And you asked what my husband was getting his PhD in – computer science.
I’m not training for an ironman, but I just might steal this list! Especially #8, because, well, because.
Hi
I’m a triathlete / lawyer as well, so I’m excited to find your blog. I’m in awe of your decision to do IM- I have to start living by those rules again, as I’m feeling totally unanchored this year. Good luck for the next few weeks, and congrats on the jury trial!
I need to live by those rules too for my half a week after yours!
Yay! Good job on your case!
GOOD LUCK! I am 100% excited for you. I can’t believe it is almost here!!
Ohhh, love the last one. Way to set your life up for success. Can’t wait to keep hearing about this crazy race you’re doing and how life feels following your plan.
Woo hoo on winning your jury trial! Good luck with your 8 rules!
I hear ya. I had ice cream (straight out of the carton) and nachos for supper last night. At 10pm. Not my smartest hour. Tasty though.
We, at the very least I, understand. Good luck in your ironman training. I’ve had to make some similar choices in my marathon training (aka no alcohol, waking up at 4:30am to get workouts in, etc) so I can only imagine how all-consuming preparing for an ironman is. I have no doubt you’ll totally rock it though because YOU’RE AWESOME! Holla!
Loving the list! Especially #6 (I am taking a break rubbing my dogs belly to type this). I am not even working out that much as of late but I need to drink so much water to be normal in the summer time, it’s so hot out.
Oh I like these 8 rules to live by and I’m not even training! Stretching, getting up early and eating real foods – these are all things I really want to work on too. Good luck with your training!
